The Formless: Where Answers Comes From
How do you talk about the invisible? That which cannot measured. Well, love is an example of the formless. So is inspiration. And wisdom. Whilst they come in many forms, it’s in the formless where their power lies. Don’t you agree?…

Form Versus Formless: An Introduction
Ah, “the form” and “the formless” – so many ways to talk about this spiritual (and practical) concept. Examples: the visible and the invisible, the known versus the unknown; nurture versus nature.
Or even, the manifestation and the mystery…
Form Versus Formless – Why Is This Important?
The notion of form versus formless can be a key part of any transformative coaching conversation, a key part of pointing someone to their true source of power – within.
And I’d like to begin a conversation about the form and the formless with you, today, to illustrate this point.
The Form versus Formless Transformative Coaching Conversation
The following formless lists are excerpts of real lists that a client and I generated during a transformative coaching conversation that took place in Scarborough, UK.
As part of this all-day conversation the client and I both wrote down a list of what I called examples of the “formless” – things you can feel but can’t see/touch/taste/smell or hear. (Tangible versus intangible, you could call it.)
So, those lists then:
Again, why talk about the form versus the formless?
Well, apart from the fact that it occurred for me to do so in the moment (during my transformative coaching session), I guess I wanted the client to see how much she was already in touch with the “formless” in her world.
And why is that important? (Wow, so many questions!)
Well, recognising (and being grateful for) the formless in our lives is one way of remembering how powerful We Truly Are.
- You see, our power, our genius, our invicibility comes from this formless energy – what I will call the Principle of Mind.
- Yes we experience problems in the world of form, of course – we live in the world of form, of “problem situations”, “relationship issues”, or what I’m going to call “wanting to know”.
- But our solutions come from the world of the formless – insipration, hope, creativity, love, faith.
Yes, solutions result in actions taken in the world of form, of course, but the best solutions arise from the world of the formless, the invisible.

As my mentor, Michael Neill, has written: It’s like comparing the most powerful super-computer ever created, disconnected from the internet and stand-alone, with the combined computing power of ALL the internet-enabled computers…
This is like comparing your ability to “work it out” in the world of form – experience, tactics and tecnhiques – versus your ability to source an inspired solution – moments of shower-time, a favourite walk, some simple silence.
Inspiration (genius) beats experienced know-how more often than you’d realise!
Form versus formless inspirational quotations a la Albert Einstein
Here’s a few inspirational albert einstein quotes that try and ‘prove’ my point:
The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.
– Albert Einstein
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
– Albert Einstein
Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.
