Steve
hasn't had a haircut in 5 years!(*) But before he cuts his dreadlocks shorter,
he'd like to raise some money for charity (The Railway Children). And he needs
your help... But first, why not see for yourself how Steve's dreadlocks appeared
one day, out of the blue, as if by magic...
1.
Once upon a time... There was a man called Steve and his hair looked like
this.
Usually.
Year in, year out, the hairdo would be more or less
the same...
Usually.
2.
...Occasionally Steve let his hair grow. As he did in 1996. And he'd pretend
he was Grace Jones, or a member of that 90s Hip Hop Band (what were their names
again?)
1996
3.
Sometimes he shaved his hair himself with a no. 2, to save money
(Too
scary to show you here! Plus there are no Steve-as-skinhead photos!)
4.
He once even dabbled with a Mark Kermode quiff. Got compliments for it, even!
(Yes, really!)
Note:
this is a picture of said film buff Mark
Kermode, and NOT Steve.
5.
But generally Steve's hair looked like this...
Pretty boring. Even pretending
to be Mr Thierry - va va voom - Henry didn't help much!
But at least his
hair was easy to manage and it didn't matter if it rained.
6.
And then one day, something strange happened... Steve stopped cutting his
hair!
7. Maybe he was fed up
of the same ol' same ol' haircut.
Maybe it was lurve-gone-wrong.
Or
maybe he was just bloomin' lazy and he couldn't be bothered to cut (or brush)
his hair anymore...
2004,
April - Mr Shabby
8. So he just let his hair grow and
grow, and he never brushed it ever again!. This is him in 2004, April.
As
you can see, Steve's hair is starting to look 'a bit shabby' to say the least!
2004,
October - Mr Uneven
And in 2004, October 'a bit shabby'
became 'a little uneven'. Friends started to laugh and began not wanting to be
seen in public with him.
But there was something more shocking awaiting
anyone who dared look at the back of Steve's head...
Still
2004, October
Dreadlocks!
There be dreadlocks!
Can
you see them! Tiny little whirls!
2005,
January - Mr Spidie-head
9. And then all that not brushing
his hair REALLY started to tell!
And despite Steve cutting out the early
dreadlocks - he didn't want to have dreadlocks sticking out of his head, after
all! - still more dreadlocks came, thicker and more determined.
And then,
perhaps, Steve had the very worst bad-hair day of all time?
(No
this photo has not been digitally tampered with. I do not know the first thing
about Photoshop, I promise! ;-) )
Still
2005, January - Mr Miserablis
10. Now this came as a BIG surprise
to Steve. And he wasn't happy!...
He did not know that he was growing
dreadlocks. He thought you ordered them at the hairdresser, or that you got them
if you smoked spliff and came from Jamaica (sorry, Bob!)
Steve was not expecting
to get dreadlocks.
Hence Steve was not happy! At first.
2004,
December - Mr Hatboy
11. So Steve decided he had to wear
a hat whenever he went outside...
Wouldn't you?
12.
Finally, Steve started to get used to his new dreadlocks...
And as the
dreadlocks started to get longer, Steve started to enjoy his new hairstyle...
He even got a bit maniacal-looking about it all!
2005, May - Mr Maniacal
13. But
still Steve did not cut, or brush, his hair...
But still, with the 'wrong
kind of light', Steve's hair still looked a bit dodgy!...
This is Steve
pretending to be the lead singer from The
Human League
2005,
June - Mr Human League?
14.Steve even shaved his goatee beard, but he did not cut (or brush) his hair
Steve
calls this sequence of 'beardless wonder' images his Michael Jackson moment. Yes,
Steve grew the beard back almost immediately.
2006,
January - Mr Beardless
15. Months
later, and still Steve did not cut his hair...
2006,
April - Mr Tentacle Head
16. But
he did learn about Alice Bands and other such 'girlie' accessories which "really
help keep your long hair under control" - ooh yes!
2006,
June - Mr Alice Band
Still
2006, June - Mr Dread Head!
17. And so it came to be,
Steve with real dreadlocks...
Look, dreadlocks with blonde bits!
2007,
May - Mr "Hello Mum!"
18. They grew longer...
("Hello
Mum!")
2007,
October - Mr Sideways On
19. And longer...
2007,
October - Mr Slurred Words
20. And tipsier...
Oops!
Who let that photographer in?
21.
And longer... so long that Steve ALWAYS had to tie them up, in the end!
And
not with an Alice band, either...
2008,
July - Mr Proud and Tied Back
22.
Until, one day, enough was enough...
Wasn't it?
I mean look how
long Steve's dreadlocks are now - 5 years since he last cut his hair!

Firefox, but with Firefox you miss the 'funny' alt tags on the images!

3 Reasons Why Steve Wants To Cut His Hair
Steve runs for Holmfirth
Harriers (a very friendly Yorkshire running club) and getting rid of the extra
locks is bound to turn him from a sub-40 minute 10K man to a, ooh, sub-39 minute
10K man. Bound to.
Steve wants to raise lots of money for a lovely
(and very worthwhile) charity called The
Railyway Children
And,
last but not least, Steve wants to go from looking like this...
